Almost 287 killed and morethan 500 severly injured by losing their limbs. All of them are small children under the age of 15.

Prabhakaran still has enough grit to continue the fight

LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran is many things to many people-national leader, freedom fighter, revolutionary, guerrilla, killer, saviour, tyrant, visionary and terrorist. Lionised or demonised, depending on their standpoint.
I cannot know what is going on in Prabhakaran's head, but I am certain he is neither frightened nor desperate. He is not afraid of death. He has been courting it since he was 17. He is an indefatigable warrior, one who is philosophically detached from all things tactical. Yet, paradoxically, in achieving his strategic goal of Tamil Eelam, he displays an unwavering attachment.

I doubt whether these military setbacks will discourage, undermine or erode his confidence or commitment to his goal. He is very clear in his mind-he is fighting to liberate his people. For that principle he lives. For that principle he fights. And for that principle he is willing to die. Victories and defeats come and go. Territories are lost and won. Cadres die, comrades betray. But to his dying breath, he will remain true to Eelam.
In the 30 years that I have written about this conflict, never has the LTTE been so alone and friendless in its struggle. Prabhakaran is a victim of a combination of his actions and international circumstances. By assassinating Rajiv Gandhi, he made an implacable foe of India. And after 9/11, George Bush's war on terror created zero tolerance for terrorism around the world. It also blurred distinctions between terrorist organisations and national liberation groups.

There is no liberation army in the world that has not faced state terror and in turn used terror as a tactic to pursue its nationalist goals. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Bhagat Singh-Prabhakaran considers them heroes-were designated terrorists by the British rulers of India. Until recently, Nelson Mandela was on the list of terrorists.

The LTTE is banned as a terrorist organisation in some 30 countries. That has given the Sri Lankan government global sanction to destroy the LTTE. But in doing so, the international community has allowed a disaster of epic proportion to unfold. This is not an LTTE, but a Tamil tragedy. Nowhere in the world has a government been continuously bombing its own civilians for over a year. This is a crime Israeli, American and NATO forces are not guilty of.

A designated No Fire Zone has turned into a vast death chamber for Tamil civilians, trapped between the LTTE and the attacking army. Nowhere else in the world is a war being waged without outsiders and independent witnesses, not in Iraq, not in Afghanistan, not in Gaza. But in Sri Lanka, the media and NGOs have been banned from the war zone, and the International Committee of the Red Cross, among the lone relief workers there, has described the civilian situation as catastrophic. A quarter of a million Tamils uprooted. Tens of thousands imprisoned in refugee camps. Thousands killed and maimed.

Those who say the Tamils deserve this fate because they supported Prabhakaran are heartless and blind. There are many who support him and many who don't. Either way, they don't have the power to influence him. Is it then justifiable to punish ordinary civilians? Is it fair to kill Americans for the sin that Bush committed in Iraq, even though they not only elected, but re-elected him? The Sri Lankan army cannot be faulted for trying to destroy the LTTE. But the Sri Lankan government cannot condone or justify destroying Tamils and their homeland in the process.

But this only strengthens Prabhakaran. Politicians and bureaucrats don't realise that the LTTE welcomes war. It swells its ranks, reaffirms its raison d'étre, it produces more emotional support for a separate state. From the previous wars that I have witnessed (journalists could manage to get in then), LTTE cadres love fighting. During peacetime, LTTE guerrillas are disciplined and restrained. In battle, there is a complete makeover. They are highly excitable, almost gleeful.

The LTTE has been written off many times before. Prabhakaran has been 'killed' or 'nearly killed' many times in the past. If the army ever reaches his bunker, he will swallow his cyanide and the legend of Prabhakaran will probably attain mythical proportions. Lacking independent assessments, journalists repeat Sri Lankan claims that this is the end game, this is Prabhakaran's last stand.

Judging from the past, I doubt it. Sure, the Sri Lankan army will wrest the last piece of land from Prabhakaran's grip. But that doesn't mean the end of the LTTE. They will revert to what they are best at-guerrilla warfare, striking when least expected. As armies before have realised, conquering territory is one thing, holding onto it opens a Pandora's box of problems.

Prabhakaran has lost wars before. He had created a de facto Tamil Eelam with its own army, police, courts and taxation system not once, but several times in the past-only to have it all smashed and wiped out. And he had to start all over again. At 54, Prabhakaran still has enough grit to start again and continue for another 20 years.

In the meantime, he will be watching the Indian elections closely to see which dispensation takes charge in New Delhi. He will be watching to see if there is a popular upsurge of support in Tamil Nadu for the plight of Tamils across the Palk Strait. He will be watching the disastrous impact of war on Sri Lanka's economy. He will be watching Hillary Clinton who said there should be a 'nuanced' approach to dealing with terrorism. He will be watching President Barack Obama who rightly analysed that conflicts stem from our perception of 'the other'.

Today, Prabhakaran's situation looks dire. But the wheels of fortune are not static. Things change. America has changed. The world is changing. Capitalism is discredited. Socialism sneaks in from the backdoor. Big banks have gone bust. Misery replaces prosperity in headlines. As new winds blow away many certitudes of the recent past, new opportunities, alignments and paradigms take their place on the world stage. And they will inexorably weave their impact in remote corners of faraway Sri Lanka, this beautiful emerald teardrop island that awaits its tryst with peace.

முல்லைத்தீவு மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ள முள்ளிவாய்க்காலில் இடம்பெயர்ந்த மக்கள் வாழ்ந்துவந்த குடியிருப்புக்கள் மீது இன்று சிறிலங்கா வான்படை மிலேச்சத்தனமான குண்டுத்தாக்குதலை நடத்தியுள்ளது. இதில் 174 பொதுமக்கள் படுகொலை செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளதுடன் 212 பேர் படுகாயமடைந்துள்ளனர்.
முள்ளிவாய்க்காலில் இடம்பெயர்ந்த மக்கள் வாழ்ந்துவந்த குடியிருப்புக்கள் மீது இன்று சனிக்கிழமை பிற்பகல் 2:15 மணியளவில் சிறிலங்கா வான்படையின் மிக், கிபீர், எவ்-7 ரக வானூர்திகள் இணைந்து குண்டுத் தாக்குதலை நடத்தின.
சிறிலங்கா வான்படையினரால் சுமார் 20 நிமிடம் வரை நடத்தப்பட்ட இக்குண்டுத் தாக்குதலின் போது 16 குண்டுகள் வீசப்பட்டன.
இத்தாக்குதலில் மக்களின் 18 கூடாரங்கள் எரிந்து நாசமாகியுள்ளதுடன் ஆழிப்பேரலை மீளமைப்பின் போது கட்டிக்கொடுக்கப்பட்ட 6 வீடுகளும் முற்றாக அழிந்துள்ளன.
இத்தாக்குதலில் 126 பொதுமக்கள் சம்பவ இடத்திலேயே கொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளதுடன் 134-க்கும் அதிகமானோர் படுகாயமடைந்துள்ளனா்.
கொல்லப்பட்டவர்களில் அதிகமானோர் காப்பகழிகள் பல மூடப்பட்டதனால் உயிரிழந்திருப்பதாக அங்கிருந்து கிடைக்கும் தகவல்கள் தெரிவிக்கின்றன.
இதே பகுதியில் மீண்டும் சிறிலங்கா வான்படையின் வானூர்திகள் குண்டுத் தாக்குதல்களை நடத்தியுள்ளன. இதன்போது 20 குண்டுகள் வீசப்பட்டதாக தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
பிற்பகல் 4:00 மணியளவில் 12 குண்டுகளையும் 4:50 மணிக்கு 8 குண்டுகளையும் வீசியுள்ளன.
இக்குண்டுத்தாக்குதலில் 48 பொதுமக்கள் படுகொலை செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளதுடன் 78 பேர் படுகாயமடைந்துள்ளனர்.

தமிழீழ விடுதலைப்புலிகள் ஒருபோதும் சிறிலங்கா இராணுவத்தினரிடம் சரணடையமாட்டார்கள், அப்படி ஒருசூழ்நிலை வந்துவிடவில்லை, விடுதலைப்புலிகள் தற்போதும் முழுநம்பிக்கையுடனும் தைரியத்துடனுமே போராடிவருகின்றனர் என தமிழீழ விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் சமாதான செயலக பொறுப்பாளர் புலித்தேவன் ரொய்டசுக்கு வழங்கிய நேர்காணலில் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.
அவர் அந்த நேர்காணலில், சிறிலங்கா இராணுவத்தினால் ஒருபோதும் விடுதலைப் புலிகளை ஒழித்தவிடமுடியாது எனவும், விடுதலைப் புலிகள் முழு உறுதியுடனும், முழு பலத்துடனும் போராடுவார்கள் எனவும். ஒருபோதும் அவர்கள் சரணடையப்போவதில்லை எனவும் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.
அதேநேரம் தற்போது பொதுமக்கள் பலரும் விடுதலைப் புலிகளுடன் இணைந்து அவர்களுக்கு உதவியாக இருந்து வருவதாகவும், இந்த நிலையில், மக்களுடன் இணைந்து விடுதலைப் புலிகள் இந்தப்போராட்டத்தில் நிற்சயம் வெற்றி பெறுவார்கள் எனவும் அவர் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.
அதேநேரம் தமிழீழ தேசியத்தலைவர் அவர்கள் எம்முடனேயே இருந்து தமிழீழ விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் அணிகளை தயார்ப்படுத்திவருவதாகவும், மக்களும் இந்த நிலையில் தமக்கு பெரும் பங்களிப்பினை செய்துவருவதாகவும் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.
அதேநேரம் சர்வதேசம் மற்றும் ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் சபையினால் தடை செய்யப்பட்ட குண்டுகளை சிறி லங்கா இராணுவத்தினர் தமிழ்மக்கள்மீது வீசி அவர்களை கொன்றுவருவதாகவும் அவர் குற்றம் சாட்டிள்ளார்.
மனிதப்பேரவலம் ஒன்றைதமிழ் மக்கள் மீது சிறிலங்கா இராணுவம் கட்டவிழ்த்துவிட்டுள்ளதை சுட்டிக்காட்டியுள்ள புலித்தேவன் சர்வதேச சமுகம் தலையிட்டு நிரந்தர யுத்தம் நிறுத்தம் ஒன்றை வலியுறுத்தி இங்கு இரத்த ஆறு ஓடுவதை தடுக்க இதுவே சந்தர்ப்பம் எனவும் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.
தமிழ் மக்களின் விடுதலைக்காப் போராடிவரும் விடுதலைப் புலிகள் அமைப்பு ஒருபோதும் அவர்களை கொலை செய்ததாக சரித்திரம் இல்லை எனத் தெரிவித்துள்ள புலித்தேவன். மக்கள் தங்கள் கடும் துயரங்களுக்கும் அவலங்ககளுக்கும் மத்தியல் தமக்கு முழுமையான ஆதரவாகவே உள்ளதாகவும்.
நேற்று திங்கட்கிழமை மட்டும் சிறிலங்கா இராணுவத்தினரின் தொடர்ச்சியான ஷெல் தாக்குதலில் 1000 ற்கும் அதிகமான பொதுமக்கள் இறந்துள்ளதுடன் 3000 வரையான மக்கள் காயமடைநதுள்ளதையும் சுட்டிக்காட்டியுள்ளார்.

Nadesan denies reports of human bomb, blames Colombo for deploying banned weapons

"The LTTE denies these fabricated stories that seek to discredit us and divert attention away from the suffering of the Tamil people," he said when contacted by TamilNet Monday night. Sri Lankan forces have deployed three types of internationally banned weapons such as cluster shells, napalm bombs and phosphorus bombs against civilians, causing heavy casualties among civilians. He said nearly one thousand civilians were killed and many more wounded in SLA attacks. So far around 1,200 have been brought to the makeshift hospital in Mu'l'li-vaaykkaal, Mr. Nadesan said.Several people were killed inside their tarpaulin huts and the rescue workers have not even been able to transport their bodies, he added.Reports surfaced in Sri Lankan and Indian media Monday that three LTTE human bombs were exploded to prevent civilians who were fleeing the so-called safe zone. Thousands of civilians, injured in the bombing, are flocking the temporary hospital at Mu'l'li-vaaykkaal.Independent sources, such as civilians and doctors, talking to media have attested that cluster bombs had caused heavy casualties in Monday's attack.

'Regular rapes, killings, degrading interrogations in internment camps'

Tamil IDPs inside the barbed-wire internment camps in Sri Lanka Army (SLA) controlled Vavuniyaa are not only medically underserved, but are subjected to degrading interrogations and there are reports of regular rapes and killings, reveals a well known German writer and Human Rights activist, Thomas Seibert, who recently returned from Sri Lanka after a humanitarian trip, conducting personal interviews that described the plight of civilians kept as near-prisoners under the SLA occupation.

Tens of thousands of people who flee from the battle field have been identified and housed by the Sri Lanka Army and its paramilitaries in several camps located around Vavuniyaa. "Many are tortured or simply shot. A pregnant mother whose abdomen was torn open and in the condition of the hand of the foetus coming out was admitted to the hospital on Sunday, after the SLA shelling.

599 killed, 3350 injured inside 'safety zone' since last UN statement

Hospital records alone have registered 599 civilians killed and 3,350 injured inside the so-called safety zone, since the last UN statement on casualties on 13 March. But, the actual number of civilians killed could exceed 1,500 as many of the bodies were not brought to the hospital to be counted and buried, said medical officials in Vanni on Friday. The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) is stationed just 800 meters away from the hospital. Even in the other parts of the safety zone, the army is barely 1 - 1.5 km away, the medical sources said.

The civilian casualty figures for the last 3 days, as on Friday noon follows: Wednesday: 50 killed, 296 injured Thursday: 52 killed, 315 injured. Friday: 12 dead, 50 injured 3,944 injured have been taken to Trincomalee through ICRC ship during the month of March.

Nadesan: there will be no post-LTTE scenario

Head of Liberation Tigers Political section, B. Nadesan, in an interview to India's weekly magazine Tehelka, said that, "[t]here will not be a post-LTTE scenario. Look around the world, and you will see the desire for freedom and dignity in the hearts and minds of all Tamils. The LTTE is seen as the way to achieve the political aspirations of the Tamil people," and added that the International Community should work towards "fulfilling the political aspirations of the Tamil people by recognizing their struggle for self-determination and a homeland," instead of waiting for a "post-LTTE scenario, which is never going to come."

Even while Colombo claims that its military is closing in on the "safe zone" where more than 250,000 civilians are cramped in, and that it is close to "wiping out the LTTE," Nadesan says "on the military aspect, in a war, setbacks and advancements are unavoidable. What matters most is what we achieve in the end." On his call for a ceasefire, Nadesan told Tehelka that "Sri Lanka keeps accelerating its genocidal war [against the Tamils]. A ceasefire is needed to address the humanitarian crisis and for people to get essential relief supplies right where they live. "Innocent children, mothers and elders are being massacred by the Sri Lankan armed forces everyday. Therefore, there is an urgent need to push the Sri Lankan government towards a ceasefire. We urge the international community not to go along with Sri Lanka’s uprooting of Tamils, being carried out in the guise of “fighting terrorism”. We appeal to the international community to halt this war immediately and facilitate a negotiation for a permanent political settlement based on the Tamils’ right to self-determination," Nadesan added.

அப்படி கூறியவரிடம் “இலங்கை மீது ஏன் பொருளாதார மற்றும் இராஜீயத்தடைகளை கொண்டுவரக்கூடாது” என்று கேட்டதற்கு பதிலளித்த டெஸ் பிறவுண் அவர்கள் இது பிரித்தானியாவால் மட்டும் முடியாது. இதனை ஐரோப்பிய ஒன்றியமோ ஐ. நா.வோ தான் செய்ய முடியும் என்று கூறியவரிடம் “இந்த விடயத்தை நீங்கள் முன்னின்று பரிந்துரை செய்வதோடு, சிம்பாப்வே மீது பொருளாதாரத் தடை கொண்டு வந்தது போல் ஏன் இலங்கை மீது கொண்டுவரக்கூடாது” என்று மாணவர்கள் கேட்டனர். “சிம்பாப்வே அரசு மீது தடைகளைக் கொண்டுவர பிரித்தானிய அரசு முன்னின்றுழைத்ததல்லவா” என்று மாணவர்கள் கேட்டதற்கு திரு டெஸ் பிறவுண் எதுவித பதிலும் அளிக்கவில்லை. தொடர்ந்து மாணவர்கள் தமது இரண்டு சக மாணவர்களின் உண்ணாவிரதப் போராட்டம் தொடர்பாக திரு டெஸ் பிறவுணுடன் பேசினார்கள். அதற்கு பதிலளித்த திரு டெஸ் பிறவுண், “பிரித்தானியா தன்னாலான முழு முயற்சியையும் எடுக்கும் என்று கூறும்பொழுது ஏன் நீங்கள் உயிரை மாய்க்க வேண்டும் ” என்றார்.
தொடர்ந்த அந்தப்பேச்சுவார்த்தையில் திரு டெஸ்பிறவுண் “மக்களைப்பாதுகாக்க வேண்டிய விடயத்தில் அரசும் புலிகளும் பொறுப்புக் கூறவேண்டியவர்கள் ” என்று கூறியதோடு போர்ப்பகுதியிலிருந்து மக்களின் வெளியேற்றம் பற்றிப் பேசினார். இந்த விடயத்தின் மீது பேசிய மாணவர்கள், “மக்கள் தமது சொந்த இடத்தில் வாழ விரும்பும்போது அவர்களை ஏன் அரசுப்பகுதிகளுக்குக் கொண்டு வந்து சிறைகளிலும் தடைமுகாங்களிலும் அடைக்க நினைக்கிறீர்கள் ” என்றனர்.
அதற்குப்பதிலளித்த திரு டெஸ் பிறவுண் “இம்மக்கள் ஏலவே பத்துத் தடவைகளுக்கு மேல் இடம்பெயர்ந்து விட்டார்கள் ஆகவே மக்களைக் காப்பதற்காகவே நாங்கள் வெளியேறச் சொல்கிறோம் ” என்றார். அதற்கு பதிலளித்த மாணவர்கள் “ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் மக்கள் சிங்கள அரசால் கொத்துக்கொத்தாகக் கொல்லப்படுகிறார்கள் ” என்றனர். அத்தோடு வெளியேறிய மக்கள் தடுத்து வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ள முகாங்களிலிருந்து அறுபத்தைந்து இளைஞர்களை சிங்கள அரசு பலவந்தமாகத் தூக்கிச்சென்றுவிட்டதே என்று கூறியபோது திரு டெஸ் பிறவுண் இவ்விடயத்தைத் தாங்கள் நன்கு அறிந்திருப்பதாகவும், தாம் உடனுக்குடன் நம்பகமான செய்திகளைப் பெற்றுக்கொள்வதாகவும் குறிப்பிட்டார். “மனிதப் படுகொலைகள் மனித அவலங்களை உலகம் வெறுமனே வேடிக்கை பார்த்துக் கொண்டிராது என்று குறிப்பிட்ட திரு டெஸ் பிறவுண் குற்றவாளிகள் நிச்சயம் சர்வதேச நீதிமன்றத்தில் நிறுத்தப்படுவார்கள் ” என்றார்.
இந்தப்பேச்சுவார்த்தைகள் தமக்குத் திருப்தி அளிக்கவில்லை என்று மாணவர்கள் திரு டெஸ் பிறவுணிடம் கூறி விட்டனர். மாணவர்களை நம்பிக்கை இழக்க வேண்டாம் என்று கூறிய திரு டெஸ் பிறவுண் தனிப்பட்ட சில காரணங்களுக்காக தாம் உடனடியாக நடவடிக்கைளை எடுக்கமுடியாது என்றும் ஆனால் வரும் வாரத்திலிருந்து இலங்கையில் போர்நிறுத்தம் வருவதற்கு தாம் அயராது பாடுபடப் போவதாகவும் குறிப்பிட்டார். தமது கோரிக்கைகளான உடனடிப் போர்நிறுத்தம் அல்லது இலங்கை மீது கடுமையான தடைகள் என்பன நிறைவேறாததால் மாணவர்கள் தொடர்ந்தும் போராடுகின்றனர். திரு டெஸ் பிறவுணுடனான சந்திப்பில் எதிர்பார்த்த பலன் கிடைக்காமையை அறிந்த பிரித்தானியத் தமிழ்மக்கள் தமது போராட்டத்தை மேலும் விஸ்தரிக்கப் போவதாகக் கூறியுள்ளனர். ஏற்கனவே திட்டமிட்டப்டி வருகிற சனிக்கிழமை (11/04/2009) மிகப் பாரிய கண்டனப் பேரணி பிரித்தானிய காவல்துறையின் உத்தியோகபூர்வ அனுமதியுடன் நடைபெறும் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.
